One day, a young man from the tribe approached her gently. She was attracted by the treatment she had never received and, of course, by the young man as well. Little by little, they fell in love , until he asked her to marry him. The girl’s father didn’t pay much attention to the request and simply approved of the union without thinking too much about it.

The young man promised that he would always treat her with kindness and consideration. Also that he would love her all his life and that he would make her happy. However, shortly after they were married, the abuse began. Legend has it that she had to put up with  humiliating words and aggression. No one in the tribe intervened, so the young woman decided to flee to save herself from this sad fate.

The young woman began to cross fields and forests. She wanted to get as far away as possible and as soon as possible from her husband, before he noticed her absence and began the search. She spent several days walking, until she fell completely exhausted in a distant place.

The young woman fell asleep. Suddenly, he felt a noise and woke up. Before her was the dreaded head wolf, someone she had already heard of. Everyone said he was wild and cruel. However, the head wolf  simply watched her. It remained like that for a while and then slowly approached. He told him that if he wanted to, he could live with his people.

The young woman hesitated, but something in her heart told her she could trust the head wolf. She decided to follow him to where the other animals were. Everyone received her with kindness and respect. The Dakota legend says that no one had ever treated her this well before.

the strength of affection

According to Dakota legend, the head wolf asked her what she liked to eat. She replied that her favorite dish was buffalo. So he  ordered other wolves to hunt  buffaloes so she could eat them. In just a few hours, they had a fair amount of meat.

The head wolf asked her how she ate this meat. She replied that cooked. Everyone left to find the necessary elements so that she could cook the meat. Later, they got the proper cutlery so that she could enjoy the food more. So, little by little, the young woman stopped feeling insecure.

The reception and treatment of the wolves was so affectionate and respectful that it allowed her to learn to love and respect herself. She became part of the group, until one day the head wolf called her again.

He told her that the humans were getting ready to start a buffalo hunt. That if they found them, they would surely end their lives. The Dakota legend tells that the wolf chief asked for help to avoid danger.

The Value of Gratitude in the Dakota Legend

The young woman thought well and understood that, in order to help her new family, she needed to intercede for them in front of humans. She got up at dawn and started to go back to her tribe. He reached the top of a hill and from there he saw the group of hunters who were behind the buffalo trail. They also saw her and approached. One of the men recognized her and warned the others.

It had been a long time, more than three years. The girl’s father and mother happily received the news. In fact, they missed you. They didn’t recognize its value until they lost it. Our protagonist  asked the hunters to eliminate the wolves from their list of possible prey.

To convince them, she told them everything they had done for her. He also asked them to give part of their hunt. They accepted.

Dakota legend says that after several days of hunting, the warriors arrived with some of what they had hunted. It rose to a peak and howled, just like the wolves, then it was gone. Then thousands of wolves appeared to consume the food the humans had gotten for them. The young woman returned to her human home and everyone proved that she was no longer that scared girl they had known.
