Simon Syndrome: Single And Immature

Simon Syndrome: Single and Immature

We could say that this is a variant of the so-called “Peter Pan Syndrome“. It develops when a man, between 28 and 38 years old, just wants to have fun and doesn’t think about starting a family or “settling down”, as is often said.

The Narcissus myth fits perfectly with this character we now call Simon. Each of the letters in your name corresponds to a characteristic of your personality: S single, I immature, M materialistic, O obsessed with work, and N narcissistic.

Psychologists say that, in addition to being single, these men are emotionally immature. They believe they are still young and spend all their money on clothes, outings and vacations.

Those who fit the “Simon Syndrome” are not looking for a woman to start a family, as they are obsessed with work, professional success, world travel, body care (fitness, diet, etc.) and lots of fun without being tied to any relationship.

They don’t mind making any sacrifices to climb positions in their work,  and tend to have an almost infinite ego. They can live alone or with their parents, but never as a couple. They use their wages to purchase personal goods and spend everything they have; they don’t save or think about the economic future, other than getting a better job.

The Four Characteristics of Simon Syndrome

Or we could say, not having a steady partner (no need to get married). For many, being alone is something that values them over time, as it happens with a wine you keep stored.

They have a somewhat misguided idea of what freedom is because they believe that being in a relationship is the same as living in a cage. Losing the label of “single” to have a love is not an interesting thing for them.

In every way, but mostly the sentimental one. That is, they don’t have the ability to love and be loved by a partner, they won’t have the opportunity to discover what it’s like to be in love, or to completely surrender and have a common project with someone (not work related ). They just love themselves and worship themselves thinking they are the most beautiful in the world. They can be people with many professional skills but no sentimental skills.

With all this, we could say that they feel a great fear of getting involved with someone (in the sense of starting a formal relationship). Today’s society generates many of these “Simons”, men who focus only on work, friends, their studies and their fun.

The number one priority for those suffering from Simon syndrome is having a better economic situation. For what? You stop to spend that money for your own pleasure and to live like there’s no tomorrow.

Having a better economic situation makes them think that they are invincible, that nothing bad can happen, that life is about having 100% fun, and there is nothing they can’t have. They buy suits for thousands of reais and like to spend on cars and state-of-the-art technological gadgets.

It is also a kind of obsession, but related to the beauty of the body. They can spend hours lifting weights at the gym and running every day in the park. They care a lot about the amount of protein in their meals and diets; they want to have visible muscles, apply creams on their faces and hands, go to the beauty salon, use imported perfumes and even, in some cases, undergo plastic surgery, apply Botox or undergo liposuction, for example.
